On December 18, 2024, an online focus group gathered ten experts from different sectors to explore the future of the bioeconomy in Western Macedonia. The session, part of the BEAMING project, centered on the importance of teamwork between academia, government, industry, and local communities—what's known as the "quadruple helix" approach—to drive innovation in the region.
Participants discussed exciting opportunities, such as linking the bioeconomy with the energy sector and agrifood industry. However, they also identified challenges, including a lack of infrastructure and the need for more active involvement from local stakeholders and better community education.
A key focus of the conversation was the BIOTRANSFORM project, which supports the shift to circular, bio-based systems. This initiative, alongside two other European projects, highlights our partner CluBE, commitment to fostering sustainable practices and innovation in the region
The group concluded with a call for stronger collaboration, infrastructure improvements, and greater community engagement to accelerate the growth of the bioeconomy in Western Macedonia and across Greece.Â
