The BIOTRANSFORM team gathered in Seville, Spain, for the last semester consortium meeting, organised by our partner CTA, to review progress, share updates, and tackle challenges in the transition toward circular bioeconomy in our regional case-studies.
Highlights from Day 1: The first day focused on presenting updates across all project work packages covering the impact assessment tool, the selection of transition pathways, as well as, governing the transition. Work is underway to assess environmental, economic, and socio-cultural factors, after reviewing and defining 16 Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) indicators and 6 indicators for multicriteria analysis.
Case-study developments were shared, including Austria/Northern Burgenland’s efforts to collect essential data for LCA and resource optimization estimations. Working groups with European stakeholders, including policymakers and research representatives, have been instrumental in identifying transition barriers and reviewing methodologies for barrier identification, following diverse approaches such as SWOT analysis and System Dynamics Modelling. Findings on governance practices and financing options were also discussed.
The day concluded with an engaging city tour of Seville, allowing the team to relax, network and brainstorm over dinner.
Day 2: The meeting resumed with the General Assembly of the consortium, focusing on key administrative topics and discussions covering reporting progress, submitted deliverables, and the status of upcoming submissions. The team also reviewed the semester action plan to ensure timely alignment with BIOTRANSFORM’s objectives and upcoming milestones. After the General Assembly was concluded, a last session explored the resource flows and their potential to be re-used in our case-study regions, utilising Sankey diagrams.
As we enter the final stretch of the BIOTRANSFORM project, this meeting in Seville has helped us focus on the last steps needed to support transitioning to circular bioeconomy in Europe.
