The Finland case-study of the BIOTRANSFORM project was presented by our Coordinator VTT at the Nordic Wood Biorefinery Conference 2024, held on October 15-17, 2024, in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden.
The topic of the oral presentation was " Green transition of forest industry in Finland ". Secondary streams from the forest industry could be more efficiently utilized. Based on existing information and discussions with stakeholders lignin was identified a side stream with high potential.
Three (3) transition pathways for lignin were selected and studied in more detail: 1) anode materials, 2) adhesives and 3) plasticizers. VTT used Sankey diagrams and LIST conducted an LCA to evaluate the different scenarios, and the environmental impacts were presented for each case.
Insights quantifying the performance of lignin-derived products in comparison to conventional products will support a focus on more sustainable options. The sustainability gains obtained in this study can inspire regional stakeholders to consider alternative pathways. This tool also provides opportunities to explore other transition pathways, enhancing circularity within the forest and beyond.
The other BIOTRANSFORM case-studies will be evaluated using the same methodology and tools as the Finland case-study.
